A fault is a break in the planetary crust along which there has been movement. According to the relative movement of the rocks on either side of the plane of breakage, faults are classified as normal, reverse, or lateral. Fault systems are numerous on Mars, and spectacular in Valles Marineris. They show an intense past geological activity of the planet.
