Mariner 9 arrived in orbit around Mars in November 1971. Its goal was to photograph the martian surface and analyze the atmosphere with infrared and ultraviolet instruments. When Mariner 9 first arrived, it was almost totally obscured by a global dust storm which lasted for a month. The dist finally cleared and the mission was a success.
