After a direct entry into the Martian atmosphere, the 2003 rovers were delivered to the Martian surface in two stages: (a) a deceleration stage using parachutes, and (b) airbags to rebound at the surface and come to a stop. The same landing strategy was used for the Pathfinder mission.
