South Pole-Aitken Basin: Over 1300 miles across, the South Pole-Aitken Basin on the far side of Earth's Moon is the largest impact crater in the solar system. Circled in this false color mosaic of Clementine images it was caused when an asteroid or comet sized object crashed into the surface, penetrating into the deep crust and possibly the upper mantle of the Moon.
